PORTSMOUTH — More than 200 fifth- to 12th-grade students from Adams, Lawrence, Pike and Scioto counties presented science projects on the SSU campus for Shawnee District 14 Science Day on Saturday, March 26 at Shawnee State University.

The science project categories included Life Science, Physical Sciences, Chemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Computer Sciences, Medicine and Health, Agriculture and Food Sciences, Energy Research, Mathematics, Environmental Sciences, Information Sciences, Manufacturing Science Research, Water Resources Research, Materials Science Research, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Biochemistry, Earth and Space, Physics, Zoology, Biochemistry and Engineering.

The Outstanding School Award was presented to Chesapeake High School with four projects rated at 100 percent superior.

Students presented 43 projects, four team projects and 39 individual projects with 47 students qualifying for State Science Day.

Students who qualified are Christopher Dehner, Lindsey Hawthorne, Sarah Mayo and Anna Mayo, Chesapeake High School; Robin Frye and Grant Hawthorne, Chesapeake Middle School; Sarah Nickel and Molly Saunders, Dawson-Bryant Middle School; Thayer Flynn, Jared Galloway, Robert Hinshaw, Claire Hinshaw, Shefali Shah, Nathan Wang, Ashley Wilkinson, Christian Wireman and Julia Wu, Fairland High School; Jenna Fulks and Rushi Shah, Fairland Middle School; Samantha DeAtley, Manchester High School; Abigail Fuhrmann, Minford High School; Mikhaila Roe, Minford Middle School; Amanda Mummey, North Adams High School; Ashley Taylor, Lindsey Baker and Brandon Blythe, North Adams High School; Carley Gutman, Ohio Valley Career Technology Center; Savannah McCoy, Peebles Elementary School; Devin Gragg and Braylie Spencer, Piketon Jr./Sr. High School; Hannah Simmons, Portsmouth Junior High School; Micah Simmons, Portsmouth Elementary School; Shelby Dalton and Seth Miller, Rock Hill Middle School; Aashish Vemsani, Rubyville Elementary School; Haley Glockner, Glennie Hopkins, Mallory Rist, Saint Joseph Central High School; Timothy Beavers, South Point High School; Elijah Bedel, Hannah Hendrix, Adam Foster and Amber Grooms, West Union High School; Christina Martin and Mary Martin, Wheelersburg High School; and Maria Fraulini and Robert Schweinsberg, Wheelersburg Middle School.

Students who received Governor’s Thomas Edison Awards of a certificate and $25 each sponsored by USEC and Time Warner Cable for excellence in scientific research in several areas are Adam Foster, Food Technology Research, West Union High School; Claire Hinshaw, Environmental Sciences Research, Fairland High School; Sara Mayo, Alternative Energy Research, Chesapeake High School; Mikhaila Roe, Advanced Materials Science Research, Minford Middle School; and Julia Wu, Biotechnology and Biomedical Technology Research, Fairland High School.

The Buckeye Women in Science, Engineering and Research gave six $100 partial scholarships to seventh grade girls with outstanding science fair projects to attend the B-WISER Camp in June 2009 at Wooster College. The six students receiving the B-WISER scholarships are Braylie Spencer, Piketon Jr./Sr. High School; Christina Martin, Wheelersburg Middle School; Robin Frye, Chesapeake Middle School; Shelby Dalton, Rock Hill Middle School; Taylor Wylie, North Adams High School; and Hannah Simmons, Portsmouth Junior High School.

One student, Timothy Beavers, South Point High School, received the Ohio Water Environment Association Award of a certificate and a $100 check for his outstanding project devoted to stream water quality, water reclamation, or wastewater treatment. His project category was Environmental Science.

The Ohio Soybean Council Foundation Science Award for outstanding projects in the area of agriculture biosciences, bioresources, biopolymers, bioproducts and/or bio-fuels using soybeans gave two awards of a certificate and a $100 check each presented to Adam Foster, Botany, West Union High School and Mikhaila Roe, Engineering, Minford Middle School.

The students will compete in State Science Day on Saturday, May 7 at the French Field House in Columbus, Ohio.
