John Lewis

CHESAPEAKE — John Franklin Lewis, 82, of Chesapeake, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, at his residence. John was born in Ironton on May 19, 1929. John is preceded in death by his father, Edgar “Eck” Lewis; mother, Jean Stewart-Lewis; and brother, Kenneth Stewart Lewis. John was a 1948 graduate of Ironton High School and retired in 1989 from GMAC after 32 years of service. He was a Kentucky colonel and helped start the Buddy Basketball League in Chesapeake. John, a loving husband and father, is survived by his wife Margaret of 56 years; his sister Peggie Davis; his children and their spouses, Jeannie (Terry) Slone, Jacqui (Steve) Mittleman and Jeffrey (Cindee) Lewis. He has seven grandchildren, Ian and Nicholas Ray, Ryan and Adam Slone, Tara Wicks, Elizabeth and Jacob Lewis; and two great grandchildren, Hannah and Aiden Wicks. The Lewis family would like to thank Hospice of Huntington, especially Mickey and Becki for their loving care.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. John will be laid to rest in Woodland Cemetery. Phillips Funeral Home is handling the services. Annie Anderson

Annie John “Joyce” Conwell Anderson, 80, of Ironton, died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011, in King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky. Annie was born Oct. 2, 1931, in Columbiana, Ala., a daughter of the late John Henry and Obena Johnson Conwell. She received her bachelor’s degree from Pace University in New York, N.Y., and was a retired school teacher having taught 20 years in New York City schools and 10 years in Ironton City schools. Annie was a former member of Otisville Mount Hope Presbyterian Church in Otisville, N.Y. and was currently a member of First Presbyterian Church in Ironton, where she served as an elder. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Timothy Arthur; second husband, William J. Anderson; and one son, Irvin Arthur. Annie is survived by two daughters, Constance Arthur of Cleveland and Sylvia Arthur of Ironton; three brothers, Bernard (Maxine) Conwell of Burlington, Charles (Frances) Conwell of Harlem, Ga. and Deotis (Dorsey) Conwell of Ironton; three sisters, Imogene (James) Brydie of Queens, N.Y., Barbara Colston of Cleveland and Gloristine (Perry) Lindsay of Staten Island, N.Y.; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Ironton, with Rev. Jan Williams officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will follow in Burlington 37 Cemetery, Burlington. Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home, Chesapeake, is handling the arrangements.
