The weather is nice so get outside and enjoy it. What better way to enjoy the spring and summer than a family camping trip.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a family trip without Fido.

Camping with the family might as be as close to Heaven on Earth as it gets for a dog. Think about it. During a camping trip, Fido gets to be with you 24 hours a day.

He gets to hike with you, eat with you, and even sleep under the stars with you. Being exposed to the great outdoors is great even for the most pampered pet.

Taking a dog camping takes careful planning to keep him safe and make it enjoyable for everyone.

First thing first — safety. Make sure he is up-to-date on all vaccinations. This is not just for his safety, but for everyone’s safety.

Packing a first aid kit with things like tick tweezers, bandages, and antiseptic is a good idea. Camping may give Fido an opportunity to wonder off so microchipping him or tags are a must.

If you have a toy breed, you may want to consider packing a play pin. Dog play pins are usually made up of small gate like panels that form a round pin.

A pin will keep your dog out in nature, but also will keep him from getting to close to the fire or any other danger.

Keep Fido comfortable by packing familiar items from home. This can include his favorite bed, toys, and even his familiar food and water bowls.

Camping is usually a time when we eat foods we don’t normally eat on a regular basis, this is not a good idea for your dog. The last thing you want on vacation is a sick-as-a-dog dog.

Take an extra leash along in case something happens to the first one. In most campgrounds, Fido will have to be on a leash at all times.

This brings me to my next point, always check ahead to see what the rules of the campground are. Make sure first, that Fido will be welcomed in the resort.

Ask the rules and if possible, get them in writing, that way everyone is clear on what is expected. Some will even require that you show proof of vaccinations.

Just like anything else, preparation makes the difference. Plan ahead and prepare for a good time.

Remember, every dog deserves to be treated like a show dog.
