HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Registration is now available for The Herald-Dispatch West Virginia 5K Championship Run/Walk.

The Herald-Dispatch West Virginia 5K Championship Run/Walk will be June 23 at 8 a.m. in downtown Huntington. The funds raised will go toward United Way of the River Cities’ health and wellness focus area.

Registration is $20 before June 7. From June 8 to June 24, registration is $25. Race-day registration is $30.

Participants must register by June 11 to get their names on their bib numbers and by June 17 to be guaranteed a T-shirt. Entry fees are non-refundable.

Registration is available at www.WV5K.com or by mailing a form to: WV 5K Championship, 613 Shaw Street, Barboursville, WV 25504. Make checks payable to WV 5K Championship.

Last year, the race raised $7,000 for United Way of the River Cities. In 2009, 519 participants finished the race. The race has steadily grown since then, with 541 finishers in 2010 and a record-breaking 680 finishers in 2011. Riley said he hopes to have more than 1,000 participants in 2012.

“We had a successful race last year, but this year, we want it to be even bigger and better,” said Pat Riley, race director. “We are really excited to have The Herald-Dispatch back on board as the title sponsor, and we are also grateful for every sponsor. This is the largest race in Huntington, and I have loved to watch it grow every year since it started four years ago. We encourage everyone to get out there and run or walk. By taking your own healthy initiatives, you are providing money to United Way to help combat childhood obesity. The more participants we get, the more we can give back to the community.”

This year, those interested in entering with a group have one more option. Group participants may register at https://charitybets.com/events/325 to place a bet on how well they think they team will fare during the race.

The following group discounts are available only before June 7:

• Team of 5+ is $18.00 per person

• Team of 10+ is $16.00 per person

• Team of 15+ is $14.00 per person
