Water main breaks leave south end dry

Published 11:45am Thursday, July 26, 2012

Wednesday afternoon, two water main breaks in the south end of Ironton and at Ohio University Southern left that part of town without water.

Ironton Building and Code Enforcement Officer John Willis said all service was restored by 8 p.m.

Mayor Rich Blankenship said a construction crew at the university hit a water main and ruptured it. Another water line on Fifth Street between Maple and Pine street “just popped,” Blankenship said. “The lines are old.”

Blankenship said the breaks affected a large part of the city.

Willis said the OUS break was repaired by 2:30 p.m. Wednesday; the Fifth Street break was not repaired until 8 p.m.

A boil water advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Friday. Residents in the affected areas are asked to boil their water vigorously for one minute before using it to cook, brush teeth or drink.
