New bridge vital link for whole region
Published 9:23am Tuesday, August 28, 2012After several years and just as many delays, Ironton residents began to wonder if we would ever see a new Ironton-Russell bridge.
Thankfully, the span continues to take shape and is on track to be completed in 2015, providing a vital link between Ohio and Kentucky.
Having a new structure with improved access points on both sides of the Ohio River is key for both states. The Tri-State wouldn’t be as strong as it is without the many bridges that bring us together.
Although the bridge does allow many Irontonians to spend their money in Kentucky, it also allows more people to live in Ironton and the surrounding areas even though they are forced to work elsewhere.
A strong highway system and stable infrastructure are vital components when it comes to growth and economic development.
Ironton’s forefathers understood this and that is why they paid to build the original span.
Although taxpayers are footing the bill for this new version, the Ironton-Russell Bridge is just as important today as when the original one was built all those years ago.
I disagree.
The areas along the Ohio River that have no bridge to the other side have an entirely different Ohio culture and the citizens are more in tune with their own state of Ohio and each other.
In my opinion, the bridges have been a tremendous detriment to Ohio, particularly regarding the economy, criminal activity, and bringing in some (not all) new citizens to Ohio with extremely bad habits and attitudes unlike anything I have ever seen. And unfortunately for native Ohioans, these pathetic individuals and their families seem to be multiplying exponentially in our state.
