McARTHUR — The South Point Pointers started well and finished well. It was just those two quarters in-between.

Tied early and scoring 11 points in the fourth quarter weren’t enough as the Vinton County Vikings held on for a 27-19 win over the Pointers on Friday night.

South Point got the ball to start the game but Vinton County’s Todd Wallingford intercepted a pass to set up a 47-yard, six-play drive capped by Tim Ousley’s 4 yard run. He added the conversion for an 8-0 lead.

South Point (0-4) answered with a 68-yard, five-play march capped by D’Angelo Palladino’s 5-yard scoring run. He also ran for the conversion to tie the game.

Vinton County (1-3) then went on a 70-yard, eight-play drive that ended on Ousley’s 5-yard touchdown run to make it 14-8.

The Vikings extended their lead to 21-8 on the first play of the second half when Andy Long bolted 60 yards for a touchdown.

The Vikings then recovered an onside kickoff at the Pointers’ 47 and 11 plays later Ousley ran 2 yards for the score and a 27-8 lead.

South Point marched to the Vikings’ 12-yard line when the drive stalled and Jesse Lien kicked a 30-yard field goal to make it 27-11 at the end of the third quarter.

On their first possession of the fourth quarter, the Pointers went on a 59-yard, nine-play drive that culminated with a 5-yard pass from Gage Townson to Austin Majher and it was 27-19.

But the Pointers final drive stalled at their own 43 and the Vikings had their first win.

Palladino finished with 80 yards on seven carries.

Chase Fout ran 13 times for 75 yards to lead the Vikings.
