Ready downs Hornets

COLUMBUS — What started as very promising soon disappeared.

Coal Grove jumped out to an 8-0 lead and was tied at the end of the first quarter against unbeaten and eighth-ranked Bishop Ready, but the Silver Knights scored 36 points in the second quarter to lead 44-8 at the half and went on to beat the Hornets 72-20 on Friday.

Coal Grove (1-3) was victimized by five turnovers — three interceptions and two fumbles.

Coal Grove scored first on a 3-yard run by Brandon Hogsten for an 8-0 lead, but the Silver Knights tied the game on a 12-yard pass from Matt Yoho to Kelly Culbertson.

Yoho threw four touchdown passes and scored on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter to lead Ready (5-0).

Ready went ahead for good in the second quarter on a 70-yard run by Doug Strickler.

Yoho hit Alex Eblin on a 40-yard pass play to increase the lead to 15-8.

Culbertson had a 9-yard TD run and then Yoho and Eblin hooked up on a 30-yard scoring pass.

Akili Taylor and Yoho ran for touchdowns and it was 44-8 at the break.

Hogsten had a 2-yard scoring run and Alex Bare hit Isaiah Gunther on a 68-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter but Ready had three scores to go up 65-20.

Kyle Estep ran 16 times for 105 yards for the Hornets.
