Kerns 2nd, Herd sixth at tourney

FT. MYERS, Fla. – Nathan Kerns shot a 2-under-par 70 but was outdone by Edward Figueroa’s 8-under 64 in the final round to finish tied for second in the Cobra-PUMA Invitational.

Marshall as a team had a strong day with a 2-under-par 286, its best round of the tournament at the par-72 Miromar Lakes Golf Course.

Kerns entered play on Monday with a one-stroke lead on Florida Gulf Coast’s Figueroa.

However, the Thundering Herd senior was unable to hold off the Eagles’ golfer as he shot the tournament’s best round of 64 and won by five strokes.

The former Ironton Fighting Tigers’ All-Ohio golfer finished tied for the runner-up spot with Bethune Cookman’s Ryan Fricker, who shot a 5-under-par 67. Fricker was deemed the runner-up due to his better third round score of 67.

The Herd finished two strokes behind the sixth place team, Jacksonville.

Florida Golf Coast was the overall team champion, with a 27-under part score of 837. They won by 19 strokes over Penn State, who compiled a team score of 8-under-par 856.

Bethune-Cookman was third with a 7-under, 857 and Wofford was fourth with a 3-under, 861.
