Seniors deserve real ideas

Published 9:11am Tuesday, October 2, 2012

Most political debates or public forums always include a couple of hot-button issues that get the public excited and give the politicians the opportunity for some sound bytes.

Last week’s Meet The Candidates Forum hosted by the Concerned Citizens of Burlington was no different.

For many years the annual event had been hosted at the Sybene Senior Citizens Center. However that facility closed earlier this year and the forum was moved to Burlington Elementary. That didn’t stop it from being a talking point and a handful of current or prospective elected officials said they would do their part to get the center re-opened.

The question voters should ask them is: What exactly will you do to help the onetime hub for senior citizens activities reopen the doors?

It sounds good when politicians voice their support for these types of projects but citizens must ensure it is more than just lip service.

Right or wrong, the Ironton Lawrence County CAO determined that it could no longer afford to operate the center.

Up to this point, before getting elected became the focus, not much had been done by the politicians to change that.

Maybe one of these individuals has an idea or two that could make all the difference. But voters must insist to a hearing those before they take words of support for anything more than just hot air.

I would like to offer this quote “We live in a culture where elders are no longer respected or considered wise, but merely considered senile and irritating.” HOWEVER!! There may be some truth in the “senile” part of the equation. I can’t remember who said this!

As the IT may have remembered prior to voting on the levy, some citizens/voters wanted to know exactly how those funds would be spent but the CAO never responded to that request – kind of makes citizens wonder why.
