Coal Grove man accidentally shoots girlfriend

COAL GROVE — The Coal Grove Police Department and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of what is being called an accidental shooting Wednesday evening.

The incident happened at about 8:30 p.m. at 113 Depot Street in Coal Grove. The shooting victim, Lena Owens, 34, was found with a single gunshot wound from a .22 caliber firearm. She was transported by Lawrence County EMS to Cabell Huntington Hospital and treated for her injuries, which were not life threatening.

According to authorities, Owens’ boyfriend, James Cron, 45, was cleaning his firearm when it discharged, shooting Owens in the breast area. The victim reported there had been no arguments and the incident was an accident.

Deputies questioned Cron and a child that was in the home and confirmed the shooting to be an accident. Authorities determined alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the incident. No arrest was made.
