How good are the Bishop Hartley Hawks?

Pretty darn good.

Unbeaten Hartley flexed its muscles by racking up 610 total yards including 552 on the ground as they routed the Ironton Fighting Tigers 62-6 on Friday.

“There’s not much you can say. They’re a great team and they just dominated us,” said Ironton coach Mark Vass.

“They can run inside, they have the speed to run outside, they’ve got a good quarterback and great receivers, and they’ve got a great defense. They don’t have a weakness.”

Sam Mackowiak ran eight times for 144 yards and two touchdowns and Ja’Wuan Woodley had 117 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries for the Hawks. Marcellus Calhoun added 75 yards and two TDs on seven attempts.

Alonzo Saxton ran 79 yards on Hartley’s first play of the game and Calhoun went 6 yards for the score on the next play for a 7-0 lead.

A 45-yard run by Mackowiak set up a 13-yard scoring run by Woodley and it was 14-0 with 5:01 left in the first quarter.

Trevor White returned the kickoff 40 yards to the Hartley 28 and six plays later Tristan Cox hit Patrick Lewis with a 16-yard scoring pass and Ironton (5-3) trailed just 14-6 at the 1:37 mark.

Lewis ran eight times for 41 yards and he had the team’s only reception.

But using four onside kickoffs — they recovered one — and a fake punt, the Hawks exploded for 35 points in the second quarter including an 85-yard interception return for a touchdown by Saxton with no time on the clock and it was 49-6 at the half.

Ironton plays at Oak Hill next Friday.
