Cheers of “Four more years!” went up as Stephen Burcham entered his office on the second floor of the Lawrence County Courthouse Tuesday night after the results were in.

With all 84 precincts reporting, the Democrat came out ahead of his opponent, Republican Jerry Rowe, by a margin of 686 votes.

For Burcham, the victory means a third term in the treasurer’s office, winning with 51 percent of votes.

Throughout the night as results came in, the race was a close one. The first results of the evening, which included early voting tallies, had Burcham in the lead only by 125 votes.

“It was a pretty close race,” Burcham said. “My opponent was from the Ironton area. … I really appreciate everyone that was out working on my side. Everyone that shook a hand and handed out a card.”

Burcham said the campaign was an experience and he enjoyed meeting people along the way. He also credited his wife, Debbie, for being a loyal supporter.

“I am thankful to God and my wife,” Burcham said. “She has been my single biggest supporter. Without her, I would not be able to do many of the things I have been able to do.”

The election result won’t be official until the provisional ballots are counted. There are 720 outstanding.

Burcham said he had a good feeling about those provisionals, which are due on Nov. 17, his birthday.

“The sun will come out tomorrow,” he said. “We will continue to serve the people of Lawrence County. Those who didn’t vote for me this time, I hope to earn your vote next time.”

Calls to Rowe were not returned as of press time.
