Jail project ‘bailed’ out by community support

Published 5:09am Sunday, November 25, 2012

The Historic Jail Preservation Corporation is greatly appreciative for all businesses and individuals who were involved in our first “Jail or Bail” event.

Our committee was instrumental in making this a successful endeavor. Sam’s Club and Walmart went out of their way to aid us wherever possible. A special thanks to Freddie Hayes for the use of his concession stand and Perry Brock for the use of his tent.

Many individuals decided to pay their bail in advance, while others were willing to turn themselves in at Burlington’s old jail. Mug shots were taken as a souvenir and bail was paid.

We are extremely grateful to the Lawrence County Commissioners and the Clerk of Courts, who matched the funds we raised.

Our goal of raising funds to install the needed flooring were met. A contract will be awarded in the near future.

We are now planning for the electrical and plumbing phases. All of Lawrence County’s citizens are urged to continue to support us as we strive toward our final goal of preserving this piece of history by turning our old jail into a museum that will make the entire Tri-State proud.

I think it is wonderful that the community and local officials pitched in to help fund this project. Excellent story!
