The first half belonged to the St. Joseph Flyers. The Eastern Eagles owned the second half.

The Flyers took a halftime lead, but Eastern dominated in the second half as they pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 73-53 on Saturday.

“The first half we executed and the shots were there. Everything that worked the first half didn’t work in the second half,” said Flyers’ coach Jeremy Williams.

“But Eastern is a good team. They force you to play a certain way. They may be one of the best teams we play all year.”

Troy Scott scored 6 points and Eli Lewis 5 as the Flyers found themselves tied 17-17.

Justin Mahlmeister erupted for 10 points in the second quarter to offset 8 points by the Eagles’ Chad Lands and the Flyers took a 33-31 halftime lead.

Eastern led 42-40 and then went on an 8-2 run over the final 1:35 of the quarter to lead 50-42.

The end of the third quarter was a big stretch. We had four straight stops but couldn’t convert and then they just took off,” said Williams.

Lands scored 7 more points in the fourth quarter as the Eagles outscored the Flyers 23-11.

Mahlmeister had 21 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists for the Flyers. Lewis and Scott scored 11 each with Scott getting 4 assists.

“Joseph Payton played great the first half and Justin and Troy did a nice job for us,” said Williams. “They made sure they knew where Justin was at all times. They were calling out where he was.”

Lands had 17 points to lead Eastern (2-0). Josh Thacker scored 15 points and Tavares Pickett had 15 points and 8 rebounds.

The Flyers play at Sciotoville East on Tuesday.
