PORTSMOUTH — The Chesapeake Lady Panthers are young and learning.

Monday they learned how playing good defense helps you win on the road.

The Lady Panthers turned in a strong defensive effort as they beat the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 57-49.

“I was proud of our effort defensively,” said Lady Panthers’ coach Chris Ball. “This was a good road win for a team of young flavor.”

Jordan Porter had a game-high 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the unbeaten Lady Panthers (3-0).

Sydnee Hall had 19 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals in a stellar all-around performance. Kaylee Curry had 6 rebounds.

Portsmouth (1-3) was led by Peighton Williams with 20 points and Kayleigh White with 15.

“Atija Spaulding did a nice job in the second half on White. She’s a freshman and she locked down on one of the better athletes in the area,” said Ball.

Hall scored 6 points in the first quarter as Chesapeake took an 11-4 lead.

Porter scored 8 points to offset 7 by White as the Lady Panthers took a scant 26-24 lead at the half.

Hall had 7 points in the third quarter including a 3-pointer to give Chesapeake a 40-32 lead. Williams had 6 points for the Lady Trojans.

“Jordan is very athletic and she can step out and shoot the 3. That was a big shot for us,” said Ball.

Each team scored 17 points in the fourth quarter. Porter scored 9 points and Williams 10 for Portsmouth.

The Lady Panthers host South Point Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
