SOUTH POINT — When the Fairland Dragons got in early foul trouble, coach Nathan Speed didn’t panic.

Speed turned to Thayer Flynn, Chance Short and Jacob Warner off the bench to help keep the Dragons playing well in a 70-46 Ohio Valley Conference win over the South Point Pointers on Tuesday.

Flynn and Short came off the bench to combine for 15 points and Warner supplied good defense.

“Our bench play was great. We got in some foul trouble so it was definitely a factor in the win,” said Speed. “Overall, we played pretty good defense.”

Fairland (3-2, 1-0) had three players in double figures led by Evan Maddox with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Kyle Raines and Nathan Campbell had 13 points each. Cody Midkiff had 6 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

Brandon Barnes had 16 points and Payne Meadows 10 for the Pointers (3-1, 0-1).

Maddox had 7 points and Campbell 6 as Fairland took a 24-15 first quarter lead.

The Dragons went ahead 36-25 at the half and Campbell had 6 points in the third quarter as Fairland outscored South Point 16-7 to build a 52-32 lead.

Maddox had 8 points in the fourth quarter to offset 7 points by John Johnson and 6 by Barnes.

The Dragons shot 30 of 47 from the field for 63.8 percent. South Piont was 17 of 53 from the floor for 32 percent.

On Friday South Point visits Chesapeake and Fairland hosts River Valley in league games.
