COAL GROVE — The St. Joseph Female Flyers were more than up to the challenge.

Foul trouble, out-sized, depth, none of it phased the Female Flyers as they beat the Raceland Lady Rams 57-36 Saturday in the River Battle at Coal Grove High School.

“We played really well. I was happy with the girls,” said Female Flyers’ coach Nick Miller.

“We played really good defense. I was concerned because they play so many kids and they have good size. We got in some foul trouble early but we held together. We played aggressive and really attacked the basket.”

Hannah Miller led St. Joseph with a career-high 29 points including 19 of 21 at the foul line. Amber Neal had 10 points and Lynsey Booker added 8.

Krystal Keeton had 11 for Raceland (2-6).

“It was a great team defensive effort and we shot free throws really well,” said coach Miller whose team was 27 of 34 at the foul line. “They fouled us and we stepped up and made the shots.”

Miller and Neal combined for 11 points as St. Joseph took a 13-5 first quarter lead.

Miller had 10 points in the second quarter including 8 of 8 from the line and it was 28-18 at the break.

Each team scored 10 points in the third quarter, but the Rams kept putting Miller at the foul line in the fourth quarter and she scored 11 points including 9 of 10 at the line.

St. Joseph plays at Coal Grove Saturday at 4 p.m. in a varsity-only.
