COAL GROVE — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets did their own version of a sink faucet. They played hot and cold.

The Lady Hornets started the game cold, then heated up in the second half to beat the Lincoln County Lady Panthers 59-46 Thursday in the Dr. Paulus Heart of Champions Classic.

The Lady Hornets lead 16-12 after the first quarter but fell behind 24-20 at the half as they scored just 4 points in the second quarter.

Coal Grove’s offense started to heat up in the third quarter as they rallied to get with 34-33.

The Lady Hornets erupted for 26 points in the fourth quarter and rallied for the win.

“I think we stood outside too long today. We played the first half like we were frozen,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.

“We were not driving to the basket. We were not shooting. We were not boxing out. It was bad. We adjusted defensively in the second half and I think we unthawed.”

Coal Grove leading scorer Ashley Adkins had 13 points, but Jacy Jones picked up the scoring slack with 18 points and Morgan Sites added 9 points.

“They played great defense on Adkins, which is smart because she is our scorer. However, our other players stepped up and scored when they needed to,” said Roach. “We shot free throws a lot better, which will help you win games.”

The Lady Hornets converted 17 of 22 free throw attempts.

Kerbi Slone scored 12 points and Laura Williamson 9 for Lincoln County (1-9).
