FRANKLIN FURNACE — The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings were in a rut, so they decided to step outside of the box.

The Lady Vikings changed up their defense and as a result beat the Green Lady Bobcats 59-43 Monday in a Southern Ohio Conference I game.

“We tried something new on defense and it worked out for us, so that was a positive,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Brandon Walker.

Another positive for the Lady Vikings (6-9, 5-5) was the performance of Kalli Huntt who scored 24 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.

Kaitlyn Payne had 9 points and Sarah Crabtree had 5 rebounds in just one quarter before leaving due to an illness.

Green (2-12, 1-9) was led by Giula Elli and Madison Applegate with 13 points each. Bobbie Applegate added 9 points.

Crabtree and Merranda Hayes scored 4 points each as Symmes Valley took a 13-11 first quarter lead.

Hunt had 8 points and Megan Johnson got all 4 of her points in the second quarter as the Lady Vikings extended their lead to 32-21. Elli had 8 points for Green.

Payne and Hunt combined for 10 points in the third quarter to offset 9 points by Madison and Bobbie Applegate and Symmes Valley took a 46-34 lead.

Hunt had 8 points and Malenna Davis hit a 3-pointer as Symmes Valley outscored Green 13-9 in the fourth quarter. Madison Applegate scored 6 for the Lady Bobcats.

Walker said a key for Symmes Valley was 42 rebounds as a team.

“We talked about holding them to one shot and we did a pretty good job of that,” said Walker.
