PROCTORVILLE — There’s a lot to be said for senior leadership. After Tuesday’s game, there was a lot to be said for Cody Midkiff and Kyle Raines.

Fairland’s two seniors sparked a big third quarter as the Dragons blew open a close game and beat the South Point Pointers 74-56 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

With the dragons ahead just 34-29 at the half, Midkiff and Raines combined for 16 points as Fairland outscored South Point 30-17 to grab a 64-46 lead.

“Cody and Kyle stepped up and got us going,” said Fairland coach Nathan Speed. “They’re the seniors on the team and they showed their leadership tonight.”

Junior Evan Maddox had a big game overall to lead the Dragons (10-4, 6-0) with 23 points. Midkiff had 15 points and 4 assists and Raines had 10 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Chance Short scored 11 points.

South Point (6-7, 1-4) had three players in double figures led by Brandon Barnes with 14 points. Payne Meadows head 13 points and 4 rebounds while John Johnson had 12 points and 4 rebounds.

The Pointers shot well from the field as they hit 21 of 45 shots for 47 percent, but the Dragons were even hotter as they made 27 of 42 shots for 64 percent.

Fairland led just 15-14 after the first quarter as Maddox scored 7 points.

The Dragons then pulled ahead 34-29 at the half before the offense exploded in the third quarter with Midkiff scoring 9 points, Maddox 8 and Raines 7.
