COAL GROVE — In order to get the momentum going their way, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets turned to “Mo.”

Morgan Sites had her best game of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds to spark the Lady Hornets to a 68-64 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Rock Hill Redwomen on Monday.

Ashley Adkins scored 23 points to lead the Lady Hornets with 24 points including three 3-pointers. Fellow guard Jacy Jones scored 14 points for Coal Grove (11-6, 4-3).

“Mo stepped up and made the difference. She has been having some open looks and tonight she was able to know hit the shots,” said Coal Grove coach Rick Roach.

“Rock Hill was forced to pay more attention to her and that allowed our guards to use their speed and get to the basket.”

Katie Johnson had a big game for Rock Hill with 24 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Lindy Simpson hit six 3-pointers and scored 18 points and Brook Knipp had 10 points for the Redwomen (6-9, 4-3).

Adkins scored 7 points in the first quarter to offset a pair of 3-pointers by Simpson as Coal Grove took a 19-16 lead.

Adkins had 8 more points in the second quarter but Rock Hill closed to within 34-32 at the half.

Adkins scored 8 points in the third quarter as Coal Grove opened up a 50-42 lead. Johnson had 9 of Rock Hill’s 10 points in the quarter.

Johnson scored 8 points and Simpson hit four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as Rock Hill erased a 10-point deficit and tied the game at 60.

“We were down 10 points and came back. We didn’t quit,” said Rock Hill coach Greg Damron. “But it was a great game. Both teams played hard and Sites played well.”

Sites scored 5 points in the fourth quarter and Coal Grove converted 7 of 14 free throws to preserve the win.

On Thursday, Rock Hill hosts Fairland and Coal Grove is at home against South Point in OVC games.
