SOUTH POINT — When the Chesapeake Lady Panthers lost their leading scorer, they did the only thing they could.

They played defense.

The Lady Panthers used a strong defensive effort to beat the South Point Lady Pointers 38-31 Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“Defensively we couldn’t have played any better,” said Chesapeake coach Chris Ball.

“It was a great team effort. Our two freshmen Atiya Spaulding and Kaylee Curry stepped it up on defense and controlled the middle. We’re happy with the win and we hope we can build on that.”

Kelsey Curry scored 9 points to lead Chesapeake (10-6, 2-4). Sydnee Hall had 8 points and 7 rebounds, Kaylee Curry grabbed 8 rebounds and Anna Mayo had 3 steals.

“Offensively we didn’t score a lot of points, but we only had 12 turnovers. We handled the pressure they gave us,” said Ball.

“That was a solid win for us. South Point is a very well-coached team. They’ve had our number for a long time.”

Brett Justice scored 9 points and Brianna Bacon had 8 points to pace South Point (6-7, 4-3).

Kelsey Curry scored 5 points including a 3-pointer in the first quarter as Chesapeake took a 7-5 lead.

The Lady Panthers’ leading scorer Jordan Porter was ejected on a flagrant foul call in the second quarter. Justice scored 4 points and Hall had 4 points for Chesapeake and it was 17-15 at the half.

Chesapeake led 27-22 after the third quarter. Aundrea Bradburn hit a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter as South Point tried to rally.

But Spaulding scored 4 points and Kelsey Curry made two free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

On Thursday, Chesapeake hosts River Valley Thursday and South Point visits Coal Grove in league games.
