Senior Night turned into Defensive Day.

The St. Joseph Female Flyers used a strong defensive effort to beat the Sciotoville East Lady Tartans 58-33 on Monday.

“We did a nice job on defense. We switched defenses up and it was a good change up,” said St. Joseph coach Nick Miller.

St. Joseph (17-3) was led by Hannah Miller with 21 points. Lynsey Booker had 14 points and Amber Neal scored 12 points.

“Lynsey was a nice spark for us. She can get to the basket,” said coach Miller.

Mercedes Tackett scored 16 points for East (7-13).

Hannah Miller scored 4 points and Neal and Haley Bartram each drained a 3-pointer as St. Joseph took a 10-4 first quarter lead.

Booker had 8 points and Miller 5 in the second quarter as the Female Flyers opened up a 28-12 lead at the half.

The Female Flyers extended their lead to 42-23 after three quarters as Hannah Miller scored 4 points and Booker and Molly Miller had 3 each. Tackett scored 7 points for East.

Hannah Miller and Neal combined for 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Coach Miller was pleased with his team’s defensive effort, but he save plenty of praise for the Female Flyers’ lone senior Hannah Martin.

“Hannah Martin doesn’t score much, but she is our leading rebounder and there aren’t many girls when you say your job is to set picks and rebound and not score and she never says a word,” said coach Miller.

“To be a senior and your job is to get beat on the whole game says a lot for her. We’re not as good is she doesn’t play her role. We appreciate her efforts.”

St. Joseph goes to Hannan, W.Va., on Thursday.
