FORT GAY, W.Va. — Missed free throws and missed opportunities led to the Chesapeake Lady Panthers missing out on a chance for a win.

The Lady Panthers converted only 11 of 23 free throws in a 54-49 loss to the Tolsia Lady Rebels on Monday.

“Again, our effort was tremendous. We just ran into our usual pitfalls,” said Lady Panthers’ coach Chris Ball. “We missed too many layups and too many free throws. We’ve got to be able to make those kind of shots if we expect to win the close games.”

Jordan Porter scored 17 points and Kaylee Curry had 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Panthers (11-9). Atiya Spaulding had 7 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 blocked shots. Sydnee Hall added 6 rebounds and 3 steals.

Tolsia’s Krista Maynard scored 30 points to lead all scorers. Savannah Winnett scored 16 points for the Lady Rebels (13-3).

Tolsia took an 11-8 first quarter lead despite 7 points by Porter.

Maynard had 7 points in the second quarter and the Lady Rebles led 22-19 at the half.

Chesapeake tied the game at 32-32 in the third quarter. Winnett had 8 of Tolsia’s 10 points in the quarter.

Porter scored 6 points in the fourth quarter, but Maynard erupted for 16 points including 5 of 6 at the foul line.

“We held Maynard to 14 points for three quarters, but then we got behind and we had to do some things different and she started to really hurt us,” said Ball.
