Do we really want to make nation great?

Published 9:39am Tuesday, April 2, 2013

As I look around me and read comments on social media, I begin to fear for the future of our country.

The hostility between right and left; liberal and conservative; Democrat and Republican; is scary. I begin to wonder if similar hostility ignited the revolutionary, or civil war.

Are we destined to have another war in our homeland?

The founding fathers definitely advocated individual rights, but I believe there was a clause in there somewhere mentioning “the common good”.

Yes, we all have the right to keep and bear arms, as our forefathers did with their muskets; but do we necessarily have the right to an automatic assault weapon whose only purpose is to slaughter? We register our home and possessions for insurance and tax purposes, why object to registering weapons?

If you are not a criminal and have nothing to hide, why not register your guns openly. I must believe in the common good and I cannot foresee government agents marching door to door seizing your guns.

On another note, who among us can cast the first stone and say our family was “pure” American and only spoke English? Immigration policies in our country are archaic and need to be a little more understanding of everyone’s rights.

Why are we so egotistical that we believe we are better than a poor Mexican crossing the river to provide a better life for his family, when our grandfather did the same thing from Ireland, or Germany?

Please take a second look around you at the big picture. We did not start this country with individuals; we started it as “we the people.”

Be a little understanding of all sides of the picture and let’s work together for the common good.

Let’s stop this sequester and get on with making this a great country instead of breaking it down.

And mikehney, that is an excuse to stop trying to protect our citizenry? Your statement is one big logical fallacy. So if there is a law on the books, there is never a need to re-visit that situation ever again? Even the second amendment itself asks for limitations, as it says ” A Well REGULATED militia”. We must always be vigilant to new ways to limit harmful products. No civil liberty is absolute and limitations on new technology requires us to continually update our laws, to protect the citizenry.

A new gun control law on top of the 1,100 that already exist is dead on arrival in Congress.

Of course there are many voters that hang on to Obama’s every word.

Good and reasonable comment deist. One other little statement in the 2nd amendment. “Well organized Malitia” , not a bunch of nuts organaizing a gang of gun owners to fight off the imaginary government coming to take your guns. I know all vetrans should know this , but the military have all taken an oath.
    Oath of Enlistment

I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God. So if the government decides to retrieve weapons from crazy groups calling themselves ‘Well organized Malitias’ , running around hiding and shooting people , do you think maybe the Army , Marines , Navy , FBI ,CIA , Homeland Security or any number of other forces are ordered to get your guns that they won’t get them? If you are afraid of your government that bad!! Its time to move.

Great job Bette. As to the immigration concerns of two of the responders to this article. Not all immigrants are collecting welfare. The vast majority of these people are hard working people. To say otherwise, is to show your underlying hatred of anything that does not look like you. Next no one is asking to regidter your guns. But what would be the problem if we did?. We have to register our cars, our property. Oh my. The governemnt will be coming for our cars!!!. Sounds idiotic. Just as your hysteria is idiotic.

First of all to comment on the immigration part of this article. Theres a huge difference between our forefathers and the immigrants of today. Today they come here illegally and get welfare and live off our tax dollars. The immigrants that built this country came here worked their butts off and built this great land. They didnt have welfare to live off of. They came here fought and died to make this a great country.

They only reason a government wants you to register weapons is because they want to know where they are so they can later take them. Our rights are slowly being taken from us as Americans and people like you and jimmer say its ok dont worry.

Great article Bette, anyone who is opposed to universal background checks and registration is clearly an idiot. There have been instances in history were guns have been taken away but those countries were under dictatorships and monarchies. MikeHaney needs to take off the tinfoil hat and turn off Fox News. And btw Mike, if the government wants to take your guns, there isn’t anything you can do about it.

————Where in history have I read that before?——

———-Again, go back to your history books————

——Archaic? They worked for my ancesters, close the borders————–

This article is down right scary!!!
