RACELAND, Ky. — Alex Whitt knows how to close a door.
Whitt turned in a scoreless 4.2 innings of relief work and the South Point Pointers rallied to beat the Raceland Rams 7-5 on Tuesday.
Whitt struck out five, gave up six hits and did not allow a run to pick up the win.
South Point took a 1-0 lead in the second when Austin Majher double, went to third on ground out by Trey Kearns and scored on a passed ball.
The Rams (15-9) took a 5-1 lead in the third.
Nathaniel Davidson singled, Cody Gollihue was hit by a pitch and Kyle Moore tripled in the runners. Zayne Sammons, Freddie Shepherd and Tyler Morris all singled in a run for a 5-1 lead.
Whitt came on in relief to strike out the next batter and get the final out on a ground ball.
Davidson — an 8th grader — pitched five solid innings before the Pointers jumped all over the Rams’ bullpen with six runs in the sixth.
Majher walked, Kearns singled and Luke Kelley walked to load the bases. Warren Price was hit by a pitch to force in a run, Jesse Lien singled in a run and Whitt singled to drive in two more.
Brandon Boggs was hit by a pitch and Lien scored on a passed ball. Chris Woodard walked and Whitt scored on a passed ball.
Whitt went 3-4 with two RBIs as the Pointers had nine hits. Lien was 2-4.
