RACELAND, Ky. — It was a good day for the St. Joseph Flyers.

Things went well for the Flyers as they held on to beat the Raceland Rams 6-5 on Wednesday.

“We beat a good team and a good pitcher. It was a good win,” said Flyers’ coach Brent Wirzfeld.

Hunter Pemberton struck out three and walked two in getting the win. Only two runs were earned.

“Hunter pitched a good game and that’s the best the defense has played. We had three errors, but they weren’t at key spots,” said Wirzfeld.

The Flyers (12-6) took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Pemberton reached on an error, Joseph Payton singled and Justin Mahlmeister had a two-run double. Jacob Clark had an RBI single and Chris Lewis and Grant Geswein singled to produce a run.

The Rams (13-12) got two runs in the bottom of the inning on a hit by Kyle Moore, an error, and RBI singles by Tyler Morris and Freddie Shepherd.

St. Joseph took a 6-2 lead in the fourth when Mahlmeister and Cole Willis singled, moved up on a passed ball and scored when Clark reached on an error.

Raceland rallied in the bottom of the seventh when they loaded the bases and Cody Gollihue’s fly ball was misjudged into a three-run triple. But Pemberton struck out the next batter to end the game.

Lewis was 2-3 and Mahlmeister 2-4 to lead the Flyers nine-hit attack.

St. Joseph is schedule to host Elliott County Thursday for senior night.
