BIDWELL — The meet belonged to the Fairland Lady Dragons, but the spotlight was on Tia Spaulding.

The Lady Dragons won the meet for the second straight year by 26 points over the Coal Grove Lady Hornets. Fairland had 135 points followed by Coal Grove with 109, Chesapeake 83, South Point 76, River Valley 65 and Rock Hill had 52.

“The meet was very competitive. There were many good runners from each school. We had a very solid meet,” said Lady Dragons’ coach Chuck Wentz.

“The girls ran hard and earned a hard-fought win. We had a lot of girls earn all-conference honors. This is one of the hardest working group of girls I have coached and it paid off.”

Spaulding took high point honors as the Chesapeake Lady Panthers’ freshman won the 100 meters, 200 meters, 300-meter hurdles and was second in the high jump.

Fairland did more of its damage in the distance events. Sydney Pettit won the 800 and 1600 meters while Shanan Ashton — who was second in the 800 and 1600 — won the 3200 meters with sister Megan Ashton second.

The Lady Dragons team of Mariah Chaffin, Taylor Perry, Jessica Price and Pettit won the 4×400 relay and the quartet of Megan Ashton, Paige Looney, Perry and Chaffin won the 4×800 relay.

Chesapeake’s Jordan Porter had an impressive showing as she won the discus and threw one of the top distances in the state as she won the shot put at 43-6.
