Hornets win 3rd straight district track meet

OAK HILL — It was a three-peat for the Coal Grove Hornets.

Coal Grove had 95 points to easily outdistance runner-up Belpre with 67 points to win their third straight Division III district track meet on Saturday.

Waterford and Wheelersburg tied for third place with 59 points.

Although the Hornets celebrated with the team trophy, they had plenty of individual performances to celebrate as well.

The top four finishers in each event qualify for the regional track meet next week at Lancaster Fairfield Union High School.

The Hornets’ 4×100 relay team of Alex Bare, Bryan Steele, Mason Nance and Austin Ruggles was first with a 45.40 time.

Also placing first was the Hornets’ 4×400 relay team of Ian McFarland, Nance, Steele and Bare with a 3:36.37 time.

The 4×200 team of Ruggles, Conor Markins, Bare and Nance was second with a 1:35.91 time.

Coal Grove’s Jonathon Joseph was fourth in the 1600 at 4:47.15. Ruggles placed fourth in the 200 meters (23.96) while Joseph was sixth (10:56.30) in the 3200 meters.

The Hornets’ Garrett Schultz placed third in the 300-meter hurdles with a 41.93 time and he was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles at 16.62.

McFarland was fifth in the 400 meters at 54.05 and Steele seventh with a 55.98 time. Andrew Henry was eighth in the shot put (43-0.25) and McFarland went 10-feet to place seventh in the pole vault.

Brandon Adkins won the high jump with a leap of 6-feet. He was also fifth in the 800 meters (2:07.17).

The Coal Grove Lady Hornets were third overall in the district meet with 96 points, but they had plenty of qualifiers for the regional meet.

Reedsville Eastern racked up 167 points to win the meet with Belpre taking second with 107.5 points.

The Lady Hornets’ Jacy Jones ran a 13.61 to win the 100-meter dash to lead the winners’ list.

Finishing first in the 4×100-meter relay with a 53.13 time was Ashley Adkins, Leslie Mulkey, Jones and Bailey Harrison.

Harrison was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles at 17.46 seconds.

Jones (27.91) and Harrison (28.31) went 2-3 in the 200-meter dash. Jones was fourth in the long jump at 14-11.75.

The Lady Hornets’ 4×200 relay team of Adkins, Mulkey, McKenzie Thompson and Harrison was third (1:55.91).

Tori Holmes was fourth in the 1600 meters with a 5:53.95 clocking and Mulkey was second in the 400 meters at 1:03.53. Holmes was also fifth in the 3200 run (13:32.41).

Darrien Hankins took third in the discus with a 101-7 toss. She was seventh in the shot put 28-8.5. Kaylee Beals won the pole vault as she cleared 7-8.

Adkins placed sixth in the 300-meter hurdles (54.55).

There was some regional qualifying on Wednesday

Austen “Red” Pleasants won the discus with a toss of 134-1. The quartet of Tyler Waddle, Joseph, Adkins and Paul Brisson ran a 9:03.64 time to place fourth.

In the girls’ 4×800-meter relay Coal Grove was third as Mulkey, Holmes, Bethany Moore and Adkins had a time of 11:00.62.
