Opal Scaggs Capper, 90, of Proctorville, undisputed matriarch of the Capper family, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at Midland Meadows, Ona, W.Va. She was born on July 4, 1923, daughter of the late Tom and Mary Scaggs. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Donald O. “Bud” Capper and her son, Eddie A. Capper.
Opal was a graduate of Windsor High School class of 1940, where she played basketball on a team that won the girls’ county basketball tournament and where she met her future husband, Bud. She worked briefly at the Huntington Dress Factory before marrying in 1943 and becoming a homemaker. She was a longtime member and Sunday school teacher at Beulah Baptist Church and at First Baptist Church of Proctorville, where she was a member for 40 years.
In her mid 40’s she returned to Marshall University for two years to take education classes, at which she excelled. She then returned to work at Fairland East Elementary as a teacher’s aide, working primarily with Nancy Bane. She also tutored many elementary students in reading from her home. She was an avid reader and always encouraged others to read. She believed reading was the key to education and education the key to success. She was most proud that all of her six grandchildren graduated from college.
Opal was preceded in death by siblings, Arlan Scaggs, Alta Dwight, Geneva Shepherd, John Scaggs and Sarah Etta Hatcher. She is survived by her son, Donald R. “Donnie” Capper of Proctorville; grandchildren, Sarah Capper and her husband Mohammed Farraj of Ramallah, Palestine, Joshua “Jay” Capper and his wife Julie of Tuscon, Ariz., Neil A. Capper of Proctorville, Ann Clark, and her husband Drew of Athalia, Alaine Purdum and her husband Corbin of Proctorville and Christin Capper of Cincinnati; her four great grandsons, Noah Capper, Mac Clark, Caiden Capper and Brooks Capper; her daughter-in-law, Susan Capper-Mannon and a sister Bobbie Capron of Ona.
Funeral service will be held at Hall Funeral Home, Proctorville at 1 p.m. on Saturday with Pastor Jeff Black and the Rev. Kevin Bloomfield officiating, preceded by visitation at 11 a.m. Burial will follow the service at Perkins Ridge Cemetery, Willow Wood. Forest Lee Darby, 73, of Russell, Ky., died on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, in King’s Daughters Medical Center. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Plaza Church of the Nazarene. Mary Louise Hogsten, 57, of Ironton passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at the Hospice Care Center in Huntington, W.Va. The Ironton native was born Sept. 24, 1955. She was a daughter of the late William K. and Leora Faye Dillow Thomas.
Mary attended Symmes Valley Schools and attended the Church of the King in Ironton. She was a deli worker for Kroger in Russell, Ky.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Jesse David Hogsten.
She is survived by sister, Debra K. Brogan of Winfield, W.Va.; sister, Sue Lawless of Huntington, W.Va.; nephew, Jesse Boles of Worthington, Ky.; niece, Tammy Enyart of South Point; niece, Kristen Howerton of Lewisburg, W.Va.; nephew, Joseph Justice of Rush, Ky.; nephew, Michael McKee of Ironton; great-nephew, Tanner Ganote of South Point; great-nephew, Eli Justice of Rush, Ky.; great-niece, Emmy Justice of Rush, Ky.; sister-in-law, Wanda “PeeWee” Hoffman of Ironton; brother-in-law, Mick Hogsten of Ironton; and many friends and her Kroger family.

John T. “Cisco” Abshire, 65 of Rush, Ky., died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013 at his home in Rush.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Fairview Baptist Church in Westwood, Ky., with Pastor Mike Rice Officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Northeast with full military honors. Friends and family will meet at the funeral cortege area in the cemetery at 1:45 p.m. Brown Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Mary M. Hilton, 86, of Ironton, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at King’s Daughters Medical Center, Ashland, Ky. Arrangements are pending at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, South Point.
