GOP making ‘lollipop threats’

Published 10:39am Friday, September 27, 2013

Republicans are determined to prevent the start-up, in just a few days, of Obamacare. They must act now because, as George Will writes, to paraphrase, people like entitlement programs and Republicans can’t have more of that.

Seriously, that is the entire argument regarding the Affordable Care Act, under all the hyperbolic rhetoric about the program is the simple truth that Republicans fear most that Obamacare will work and people will like the program.

And if Americans like Obamacare, then Democrats will get all the credit (rightfully) and the great Republican fear of bigger government will be realized yet again.

It should be noted that Republicans only fear Democratic big government as Republican administrations have expanded government jobs and Democrats have reduced government jobs in their respective administrations over the past 30 years.

But memory is not important in politics, perception always takes center stage. So it is that if there is only one thing that unites Republicans today, it is their hatred of Obamacare, Obamacare, Obamacare.

Driven by rich supporters on the extreme Right of the political spectrum Republicans have turned over party control to the Tea Party contingent to kill Obamacare in its crib.

Of course there is the unfortunate fact that they do not have the power or the votes to kill the Affordable Care Act.

Nevertheless the hostage taking is underway, and the first hostage to stand in front of a lollipop aimed squarely at his neck is the continuing budget resolution. Ah yes, Republicans say they are not going to shut down the government, while threatening to do exactly that, unless their minority demands are met and Obamacare is killed.

The problem is, if your hostage is government shutdown but you already state you will not shutdown the government, then isn’t the knife at the throat really just a lollipop at the neck?

Indeed, it is a lollipop threat and should be seen for what it is, a threat that if executed is more likely a self-inflicted wound than an attack. So by all means, attack with that lollipop from the Right and go for the throat, except, whose throat?

Yesterday the same Republicans who have mounted the lollipop attack on the budget changed their plan and are now offering to lollipop attack the debt ceiling instead and pass the continuing budget resolution with the foolishly designed sequestration portion left in place.

The strategy includes demanding the end of Obamacare in mid-October when the federal government runs out of money to pay already approved expenses passed by Congress. The idea is to then default on the US debt to force responsible legislators and the president to save the country from their willingness to destroy the national credit and damage the economy.

The strategy has but one problem, the President has indicated that he will not deal on the debt ceiling at all. If that is the case then, Republicans brandishing the lollipop once again will be left with no one to threaten but the American people.

Democrats, for their part, seem perfectly willing to sit on the sidelines, vote for funding the government and paying the debt, and watch the extreme right of the Republican Party use their lollipop threat as loudly and as often as they like.

At the end of the day there are still no votes to accomplish what Republicans demand be done so the budget will be continued and the debt ceiling will rise, and as Shakespeare once noted, it will much ado about nothing.

Mike; The barricade has been erected by the Republican Party due to the influence of the Tea Party. Obamacare is the law, it has been passed by both houses of congress and approved by the president and Supreme Court. I agree it does have it’s weakness’s per example, tax payer money being used to aid in the killing of the unborn, these problems can be worked out. Two wrongs do not make a right. The childish actions of the Republican Party are causing undue hardship on many Americans. All National Parks and Monuments have been closed due to a reduction in forces. There have been thousands of Federal employees furloughed, not to mention the loss of revenue incurred by the communities surrounding these Federal Parks. Those 80 and 90 year old vets should be thrown in jail for breaking the law by crossing the barricades. Anarchy is not democracy. Here in St. Augustine The Castillo DE San Marcos and Fort Matanzas National Monument have been closed due to the shutdown, both operated by the National Park Service. People from as far away as Australia have been deprived of touring these National Monuments, thanks to the childishness and immaturity demonstrated by the Republican Party under the influence of the Tea Party. I talked to a couple of the Australians (who were disappointed) and remarked, this would never have been allowed in their country, in reference to The Great Barrier Reef. Your comment “Like I’ve said before, SHUT ER DOWN.” They have, demonstrating ignorance in action.

    Mick
Who’s complaining? These 80 and 90 year old vets have faced more than an Obama barricade in WWII; some even in wheel chairs.
I wasn’t there physically but was with them in spirit.
    Also in the news:
    Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-TN

Congressmen also added a provision to that bill that delays for one year any taxpayer subsidies for insurance plans that include elective abortion, as well as postponing the implementation of the HHS mandate.

Under the terms of the Affordable Care Act’s HHS mandate, employers must provide all employees with insurance plans that include abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization, and contraception with no co-pay, or pay a fine of $100 per employee per day.

Like I’ve said before, SHUT ER DOWN.

Guess letter to King Obama, not to block access to memorials by veterans was ingnored. Didn’t work though, since veterans visited the open sites anyway. And a commenter says it well concerning our dem leaders.—————————————————–And why would King Barry I and his Obamanoids place guards on an ***open mall*** to keep people out? Only to say, in effect, “see, I told you those Republicans are evil. Not only do they want to starve poor kids, they want to keep these people from what will likely be their last chance to see their memorial”.

I’ve been to the mall and seen all the monuments and there are NO turnstyles or checkpoints to go through to enter.

I will guarantee you, Gene Taylor was the last “Democrat” I will ever cast a vote for. Democratsa are extinct, having been replaced by “progressives”, code word for what I call SoComs – socialists at a minimum to full blown communist.

There is a video on youtube by Rafael Cruz, Ted Cruz’s dad. I recommend all watch it. The man has lived through one communist takeover already and speaks from experience.

Good article and good comment responses. The hard right , Koch Brothers and a few other Super rich , that brought us the “Tea Party” are wanting to destroy all the safety networks , Social Security , food stamps , welfare (For the poor only) drive our wages down to the minimum , cut benefits out or give them to the corporate interests , and make this a two class country (Us and them),then when they get their way , there will be no regulatory , over sight to bother them.
The low class will pay all the taxes , they will let the infrastructure crumble ,then the few jobs we have left in this country will be fought for so hard , the wages so low , then we will truly know what it feels like to be slaves. The government won’t confiscate your guns , you’ll trade them or sell them for food , and at the end we will finally know who is really the “devils’ helpers , and many will be surprised , when it’s too late. Just my opinion , which means little on here.

I weary of the simple-mindlessness and ignorance of our leaders, there lack of care and concern for all members of our society in particular those less fortunate. Who’s responsible? We are, we elect them, democracy in action. It does have it’s weaknesses, which we hesitate to admit.

As a second afterthought; The Republican Party has been sucking on lollipop’s (expensive ones by the way) for many years, without due regard for the average American. the House Of Representatives is a total fiasco, thanks to the Tea Party and their influence. Ignorance and self-centeredness in action. Holding the American Public hostage due to their influence and actions.

As an afterthought; Giving the Democratic Party free reign would be a mistake, as demonstrated by their lack of moral fiber and fortitude.

I think Obamacare is an advancement in our Medical Care System, but only the first faltering step. Thanks to Hilary Clinton for initiating this advancement. There are serious problems, per example, using tax payer money to fund the killing of the unborn and pay for abortive drugs. This goes against the conscience of any educated civilized individual. The ultimate solution to our Health Care problems (pertaining to finances) is Socialized Medicine. We are the only major country in the world that does not have it. There is no ultimate solution when it comes to extending life indefinitely. When it comes to comparing the quality of Health Care between countries having Socialized Medicine and those who have not, it is tit for tat. I highly endorse Socialized Medicine for the betterment of our citizens. It is a lot less complicated (and better) than Obamacare. When it comes to quality? I feel it would be better, you would get rid of those practitioners who are only in it for the money and retain those who are dedicated to the service of their fellow man and woman. I have friends living in England and Ireland, they can’t believe we do not have Socialized Medicine, after all, were the self professed leaders.
