CHESAPEAKE — It’s what’s up front that counts.

Strong line play on both sides of the ball were the difference as the Portsmouth West Senators blanked the Chesapeake Panthers 42-0 on Friday.

The Senators had 369 yards on the ground to just 71 for the Panthers (0-5).

“They beat us up front. It is as simple as that,” said Chesapeake coach Andy Clark. “We were flat and we didn’t play well. We’ve had some injuries, but you can’t let that affect you.”

Austin Bricker ran 17 times for 109 yards and a touchdown to lead West (2-3). Dylan Koons had 59 yards on seven carries and Bryson Hurd ran eight times for 57 yards and three touchdowns.

Maccoy Brown had 68 yards on 12 carries for the Panthers.

Hurd had a pair of 8-yard touchdown runs to put West up 14-0 early in the second quarter. Mason Howell had a 4-yard scoring run and Hurd rambled 18 yards for a touchdown with 3:17 left in the half to make it 30-0 at the break.

Bricker ran 6 yards for a score in the third quarter and backup Job Swords dashed 40 yards for a score with just 3:11 left to set the final score.

The Panthers managed just 145 total yards of offense. Backup quarterback Austin Oldaker was 7 of 18 for 74 yards.
