Fairland wins free-scoring game with SP

SOUTH POINT — No one could blame the scoreboard if it had blown a fuse.

With more than 1,000 yards of total offense between them, the Fairland Dragons outscored the South Point Pointers 74-43 Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Fairland (3-3, 1-0) amassed 701 total yards with 341 coming on the ground and 360 through the air.

Evan Maddox ran 16 times for 218 yards and scored three touchdowns. Quarterback Chance Short was 18-of-28 passing for 262 yards and six touchdowns. He also ran for a score.

Kyle Sowards had four receptions for 131 yards and three TDs. Maddox caught four passes for 98 yards and two scores.

South Point (4-2, 0-1) was led by quarterback Gage Townson who was 18 of 39 for 366 yards and four touchdowns.

The Pointers ran for minus 13 yards due to Townson being sacked for a minus 37 yards.

The Pointers’ Isaih Jones caught six passes for 160 yards, Josh Browning two for 75 yards and Mason White seven for 66 yards. White caught two touchdown passes while Jones and Browning had one each.

Fairland took a 6-0 lead on a 70-yard punt return, but South Point tied the game on a 36-yard pass to White.

The Dragons then took the lead for good with three straight touchdowns on a 69-yard pass to Sowards, a 45-yard pass to Maddox and a 46-yard touchdown run by Maddox.

Browning’s 44-yard touchdown reception cut the deficit to 26-13, but Maddox hauled in a 38-yard scoring strike from Short and it was 33-13 at the end of the first quarter.

The Dragons then went up 55-13 at the half with three touchdowns in the second quarter. Short ran 13 yards for a score and threw 18 yards to Sowards for a TD, and then Campbell had a 2-yard touchdown run.

Fairland outscored the Pointers 19-12 in the third quarter to build a 74-25 lead.
