A Chesapeake man who shot a dog in May was sentenced to probation and drug and alcohol counseling.

David Kyle, 48, of 46 Private Drive 142, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court, as well as a third-degree felony count of having weapons under a disability.

The charges stemmed from an incident in May where, according to a report from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Kyle fired a 12-gauge shotgun at a beagle, spraying buckshot into its spine. Kyle admitted to being intoxicated at the time of the incident, according to the report, and claimed he had previously called the sheriff’s office to pick up the dog, which he did not like.

According to the report, the 2-year-old beagle was taken to an emergency veterinary center in Ceredo, W.Va., but later was euthanized as a result of its injuries.

Judge D. Scott Bowling sentenced Kyle to four years community controlled sanctions under intensive supervised probation, as well as outpatient drug and alcohol counseling, 90 days in jail, suspended, and restitution in the amount of $315.

In other cases:

• Clayton Cremeans, admitted CCS violations. Judge Charles Cooper sentenced the man to five months in prison.

• Cooper sentenced Stephen Douglas, 31, of 1017 County Road 52, Ironton, to six months in prison for a fourth-degree charge of receiving stolen property, to which he had already pleaded guilty.

• Whitney Sue Pell, 26, of 1343 Hall St., Huntington, W.Va., was arraigned on a bill of information of fourth-degree theft from Intermountain Electronics, to which she pleaded guilty.

Cooper ordered a pre-sentencing investigation and set sentencing for Oct. 23.

• Bobby Taylor, 35, of 1807 S. Second St., Ironton, pleaded guilty to four fifth-degree counts of trafficking in crack cocaine. Cooper set sentencing for Nov. 6.

• Cooper sentenced Ashley Bailey, 29, of 52 Private Drive 103, South Point, to 11 months in prison for charges of fifth-degree theft from the elderly and misdemeanor possession of drugs, to which she had already pleaded guilty.

• Frank Lewis, 31, of 2212 N. Fifth St., Ironton, pleaded guilty to a fifth-degree count of breaking and entering. Judge D. Scott Bowling set sentencing for Oct. 30 and modified the man’s bond to $10,000 OR and warned him if he didn’t show up for sentencing, he could face additional charges and his negotiated deal would be voided.

• Laronda Mize, 33, of 515 S. Ninth St., Ironton, pleaded guilty to one fourth-degree and two fifth-degree counts of trafficking in crack cocaine. Bowling sentenced the woman to 12 months in prison, a three-year driver’s license suspension and a total of $5,000 in fines.

• Todd Hehl, 53, of 120 Linda Ave., Lucasville, pleaded guilty to a fifth-degree count of possession of drugs (mushrooms).

Bowling sentenced the man to four years CCS under intensive supervised probation, STAR, a $1,250 fine, 200 hours community service and a six-month driver’s license suspension.
