A former city employee already serving jail time for theft of a water meter is now facing additional charges of stealing money from the income tax department.

Mark Weber, 42, of 1409 S. Fourth St., Ironton, was charged Friday with 10 counts of misdemeanor theft, which totals to $1,852.

Detective Joe Ross of the Ironton Police Department said Weber had been under investigation for theft from the income tax department where the man had been an employee since June.

Ross said the man was fired from the income tax department in May after money allegedly came up missing from his drawer.

A deeper investigation began after some Ironton residents complained of receiving delinquent notices for their tax bills, although they had receipts that showed the bills had been paid in cash.

The alleged thefts occurred between April 1 and April 29, Ross said.

Ross said the city finance department cooperated fully in the investigation.

Weber pleaded not guilty Monday in Ironton Municipal Court. Bond was set at $5,000.

Weber is still currently serving a 10-day jail sentence after pleading no contest to the theft of a water meter. Weber was a former employee of the city’s waste water department.

He took a voluntary layoff in 2012, but was brought back to the income tax department in March.
