The condition of an 18-year-old Coal Grove man shot by a homeowner as he was allegedly attempting a robbery has been upgraded.

Brandon Blake Danner is now in serious condition at Cabell Huntington Hospital following surgery on Wednesday. Danner, who had originally been in critical condition, was shot four times in the upper torso with a 380-caliber handgun.

According to Sheriff Jeff Lawless, the homeowner had heard a noise and went to investigate. The homeowner allegedly saw Danner removing a motorcycle from the shed. The homeowner said Danner had told him he had a knife.

The name of the homeowner has not been released as the investigation is ongoing and the homeowner fears retribution, Lawless said

Right now Danner has been charged with breaking and entering, a fifth degree felony.

“We are investigating the alleged involvement the victim of the shooting had in the theft and also investigating the shooting,” County Prosecuting Attorney Brigham Anderson said. “From Day One we have assisted the sheriff’s office and the drug and major crimes task force.”
