FRANKLIN FURNACE — The Green Bobcats felt like they were throwing a boomerang. They kept putting up shots and they kept coming back.

The Bobcats got off 50 shots but converted just 19 for 38 percent as they lost their season opener 74-54 to the South Gallia Rebels Saturday.

“We got plenty of shots. We just couldn’t score. We couldn’t buy a basket and they shot well,” said Green coach Bobby Blanton.

Trent Marcum led Green with 22 points and 6 rebounds. Chris Applegate had 11 points and Ryan Gaffney scored 10. Caleb Johnson pulled down 5 rebounds.

Brayden Green had a game-high 31 points for South Gallia (1-0). Landon Hutchison scored 12 and Joseph Ehman 11.

Applegate scored Green’s first 5 points for a 5-3 lead.

But the Rebels came back to take a 15-11 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Rebels outscored Green 21-8 in the second quarter to take a 36-19 halftime lead.

Marcum scored 12 points on 6-for-11 shooting, Gaffney had 8 points and Applegate drained a 3-pointer as Green cut the deficit to 10 points on two occasions but trailed 54-42 at the end of the third quarter.

South Gallia continued to build on its lead in the fourth quarter.

“We need to put four quarters together. And we let them get too many shots in the paint,” said Blanton.

Green visits South Webster Tuesday.
