WILLOW WOOD — Symmes Valley Lady Vikings’ coach Brandon Walker used a college game as a teaching lesson.

The Lady Vikings did not play well and lost to Beaver Eastern on Monday. Walker pointed out that North Carolina suffered an embarrassing loss to UAB, then bounced back to beat No.1-ranked Michigan State.

With that in mind, the Lady Vikings shutdown the New Boston Lady Tigers 37-26 Thursday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

“We used that as an example and the last two days the girls flat got after it. They were more focused today. We’ve got to have effort and we have to guard people,” said Walker.

“We went back to work on the defensive effort and holding them to two points in the first quarter was big for us.”

Symmes Valley held New Boston to just 2 points in the first quarter and led 9-2 as Hannah Maynard scored 6 points. It was 14-11 at the half.

Kalli Hunt then scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half and Breanna Brumfield had all 8 of her points in the second half as the Lady Vikings (1-2, 1-2) got their offense on track and outscored the Tigers 24-15 in the second half.

“We challenged Hunt in the second half and she responded,” said Walker. “We had a big second half from Brumfield and Hunt on the offensive end. Every kid who went in gave us a great effort defensively.”

New Boston (0-4, 0-3) was led by Kristen McGraw with 13 points.
