RIO GRANDE — The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings have a story to match any fisherman who has a “you should have seen the one that go away” tale.

Symmes Valley led by 9 with 5:16 to play but could not hold the lead as the South Gallia Lady Rebels rallied for a 46-44 win Saturday in the Rio Grande Classic.

“It was a game of runs. We had a lead and couldn’t protect it. Our inexperience in those situations hurt us, but (Saturday) night was a learning experience and we will grow from it,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Brandon Walker.

South Gallia led 9-7 after the first quarter and 22-19 at the break.

Symmes Valley pulled even at 28 to end the third quarter and built its lead early in the fourth before the Lady Rebels made their comeback.

Kalli Hunt had 12 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Lady Vikings (1-2). Breanna Brumfield had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals while Hannah Maynard grabbed 7 rebounds.

Autumn Keathley scored 9 points and Sierra Ross 7..

“I was really happy with Keathley and Ross. Both stepped up big in the scoring column. That’s only going to help us,” said Walker. “Both kids hit big shots down the stretch. We just couldn’t hold on in the final 45 seconds.”
