PROCTORVILLE — Everyone likes to score, but the Fairland Dragons thought defense was kind of fun, too.

The Dragons used a solid defensive effort to beat the South Point Pointers 63-48 Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

The Pointers shot 40 percent from the field but only 2-of-13 from the 3-point line for a meager 15 percent.

“We played really good defense. Nathan Campbell and Luke Phillips did a great job,” said Fairland coach Nathan Speed. “Our bench did a nice job, too. Trent (Wilcoxon) hit some big shots early and (Jacob) Warner hit a big 3.”

Evan Maddox scored 17 points to lead the Dragons (3-0, 1-0). Chance Short scored 14 points including three 3-pointers and Nathan Campbell had 7 points, 15 rebounds and 7 assists.

Eli Ketron led the Pointers (0-2, 0-1) with 11 points and Brandon Barnes scored 9. Brandon Boggs grabbed 12 rebounds.

Short and Maddox combined for 15 points in the first quarter as Fairland raced to a 20-7 lead.

Wilcoxon scored all 6 of his points in the second quarter and the Dragons were up 34-26 at the half.

Fairland used balanced scoring in the second half and led 47-39 after three quarters. The Dragons held the Pointers to 9 points in the fourth quarter as they began to pull away.
