PROCTORVILLE — The only finger pointing the Fairland Dragons did was at themselves.

The Dragons started strong but couldn’t continue the pace as they lost 69-60 to the Wheelersburg Pirates Saturday.

“We couldn’t get it done. We don’t have anyone to blame but ourselves,” said Speed. “We got within three points in the third quarter and couldn’t get over the hump.”

The Dragons played without second-leading scorer Chance Short for the second straight game due to a concussion.

Evan Maddox scored 26 points to lead the Dragons (5-3). Nathan Campbell had 13 points and 10 rebounds and Thayer Flynn added 12 points.

J.D. Widdig led four Pirates in double figures with 21 points — 16 in the second half — and 10 rebounds. Eddie Miller, Tyler Claxon and Jacob Spradlin all had 13 points.

Maddox scored 10 and Flynn 8 points in the first quarter as Fairland took a 21-10 lead.

The Pirates (2-3) cut the deficit to 28-23 at the half. Campbell hit a shot at the buzzer for the eighth time this season.

Fairland lead 44-40 after three quarters, but Widdig had 8 points and the Pirates were 14-of-18 at the line in the fourth quarter. Claxon was 5-of-6.
