CHESAPEAKE — Jump shots created a jump start.

The Fairland Lady Dragons hit eight 3-point goals including four in the first quarter to trigger a 21-point outburst as they went on to beat the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 69-35 in an Ohio Valley Conference game Thursday.

Chandler Fulks and Caitlin Stone each drained 3-pointers and Kelsey Riley added five points as Fairland took a 21-10 first quarter lead.

“That’s what got us out there. We got four 3s in the first quarter and that’s what go us out there and gave us our cushion,” said Fairland coach Jon Buchanan.

“We didn’t play that well in the first half. A lot had to do with the first quarter because we made some shots.”

The OVC leading Lady Dragons (9-3, 6-0) stretched the lead to 37-23 at the half.

Taylor Perry and Fulks each hit triples in the third quarter as Fairland extended the lead to 50-31. Atiya Spaulding had four points in the quarter for Chesapeake.

Fulks had five more points and Stone knocked down another trey as Fairland outscored the Lady Panthers 19-4 in the fourth quarter.

“We weren’t real happy with how we played defense the first half. We did a pretty job of that in the second half. We held them to 12 points,” said Buchanan.

“Chesapeake does a good job rebounding the ball. That’s a big part of their offense. We did a pretty good job of limiting them to one shot.”

Fulks had 17 points, Kelsey Riley 14 points and Stone 12 for the Lady Dragons. Terra Stapleton pulled down 11 rebounds to go with two blocked shots. Mackenzie Riley and Kelsey Riley had eight rebounds each.

Spaulding scored nine points to lead the Lady Panthers (8-6, 3-3).

On Saturday, Fairland entertains Ashland, Ky., while Chesapeake hosts Gallipolis’ varsity at 1 p.m. The junior varsity plays Rock Hill 11:30 a.m.
