Last-second shot in OT gives Vikings win

It was a thrilling game with a thrilling end.

Ryan Gibson hit a 10-footer at the buzzer in overtime as the Symmes Valley Vikings edged the St. Joseph Flyers 68-67 Saturday.

“It was an exciting game. Both teams played well at times, and both teams made mistakes at times,” said Vikings’ coach Donnie Saunders.

St. Joseph missed two foul shots with 4.5 seconds left in overtime and the Vikings got the rebound. Gibson took the ball the length of the floor and hit the shot.

Tyler Rowe scored 30 points to lead the Vikings (13-7). Gibson was next with nine.

St. Joseph (11-9) had four players in double figures. Wulf Goheen scored 15, Hunter Pemberton scored 14 including three 3-pointers, Joseph Payton had 13 and Troy Scott 12.

The game was tied 15-15 at the end of the first quarter. Rowe and Jonathan Kouns combined for 10 points while Pemberton hit a pair of 3-pointers and Payton had five points including a trifecta.

Scott scored six and Pemberton five in the second quarter as St. Joseph took a slim 33-32 halftime lead. Rowe had 10 points for the Vikings.

Goheen scored five points in the third quarter as the Flyers extended the lead to 48-41.

Rowe had nine points including 3-of-4 at the foul line as the Vikings erased the 7-point deficit.

Goheen was 4-of-5 and Chris Lewis 3-of-4 at the line in the quarter as the Flyers held on for the overtime.

The Vikings play at Sciotoville East on Monday. St. Joseph plays Reedsville Eastern at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Division IV sectional at Meigs.

In the reserve game, Symmes Valley (19-1) won 49-31 as Matt Rutt scored 13. Zach McGraw had seven for St. Joseph.
