Sherman Jenkins

June 23, 1926 — Feb. 27, 2014

Sherman Edward Jenkins, 87, of South Point, passed away Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at the Ashland Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. The Lawrence County native was born June 23, 1926, the son of the late Tony and Helen Venz Jenkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Jenkins; and a sister, Lois Day. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joanna Wilson Jenkins, whom he married Sept. 18, 1948.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Debra, and son-in-law, Joe Nistico, of Lake Mary, Fla.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Shane and Virginia Jenkins, of Tokyo, Japan, and Michael Jenkins, of South Point; a brother, Richard Wagner, of Akron; a granddaughter, Joanna Velez-Diaz, and her husband, Carlos; and three great-grandchildren, Alexander, Isabella and Marcos Velez-Diaz, of Sanford, Fla.

Sherman was a graduate of Ironton High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Corp in Europe during World War II. He was a former employee for Allied Chemical in South Point and Dayton Malleable in Ironton and was of the Baptist faith. A lifelong sports enthusiast, Sherman played football, baseball and softball and won several regional golf tournaments. He helped coach his sons’ Little League baseball teams.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in Woodland Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Lee Cremeans officiating. There will be no public visitation and Phillips Funeral Home in Ironton is assisting the family with the arrangements.

 

 

 

Lillian Keller

Lillian Heighton Keller, 79, of Daytona Beach, Fla., passed away Friday, Feb. 28, 2014. Lillian was born in Ironton in 1934, but resided in Daytona Beach for the past 30 years. She was the daughter of Pete and Ruth Heighton. She is survived by two sisters, Mary Labor, of Ironton, and Joan Heselden, of Columbus; three children, Joan Hunter, Scott Hunter and Melissa Bryant; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Any donations in her memory may be offered to Hospice of Volusia Flagler, Port Orange, Florida.

 

 

 

Robert Yates

Robert L. Yates II, 45, of Ashland, Ky., died on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at King’s Daughters Medical Center. There will be no services held at this time. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.carmanfuneral.com.

 

 

 

Delores Berry

Delores Ann Berry, 68, of Huntington, W.Va, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntingtoin. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2014, at Hall Funeral Home in Proctorville. Burial will follow in Docks Creek Cemetery in Kenova, W.Va. Joseph Singer, 56, of Proctorville, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at his home. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hall Funeral Home in Proctorville. Burial will follow in Rome Cemetery.
