The meet was won by Wheelersburg, but the meet belonged to Raceland’s Connor Messer.

Messer won three events — he scratched in a fourth event — as the top performance Saturday in the 61st Ironton Invitational track and field meet.

Wheelersburg used depth to win the meet with 170 points. Fairland got good efforts from Zach McKinney, Josh Sifford and Jake Wireman to help the Dragons finished second with 146 points.

South Point was third with 85 points followed by Rock Hill with 65, Raceland 62, Ironton 47 and Chesapeake 40.

“It was a good meet. There were some good athletes. The Messer kid from Raceland is a heck of an athlete,” said Cronacher.

“I thought our kids did a good job for the first time out and being so young. They’re going to get better. I was pleased with their effort.”

Ironton coach Greg Cronacher praised his young team including junior Troy Rust, sophomores Isaiah Brickey-Scott and Tyler Milleson and freshmen Isaiah Long and Tyler Webb.

Messer won the 110-hurdles, the pole vault and high jump on the cool, windy day.

Sifford won the 800 meters and discus, McKinney took the shot put and Wireman was first in the 300 hurdles.

South Point’s Gage Townson went 18-5 to win the long jump and Stephen Wagoner claimed the 400 meters.

Rock Hill’s Seth Miller won the 1600- and 3200-meter runs.

Chesapeake hosts the annual Lions Club meet on Thursday.
