PROCTORVILLE — The rain dried up, but not the pitching of Kaitlyn Brown.

Brown struck out 12 and walked four as she pitched a six-hitter to lead the South Point Lady Pointers to a 7-2 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Fairland Lady Dragons Monday.

“We finally got a game in between the rain. It was great to move to 2-0 and 1-0 in the conference,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Tanner Heaberlin. “We had another strong pitching performance by Kaitlyn Brown.”

Fairland pitchers Allison Shepherd and Caitlin Stone combined to allow only five hits, but they gave up seven walks and a hit batsman.

“We have to capitalize when we have runners on base,” said Fairland coach Mindy Clark.

Fairland took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Mackenzie Riley singled, passed ball and Shepherd had an RBI single.

South Point tied the game in the third when Hannah Carey and Sylvia Griffith both doubled.

The Lady Pointers took a 3-1 lead in the fourth.

Bonnie Hileman was hit by a pitch, Brown bunted for a hit and Abbey Winkler tripled the runners home.

South Point made it 5-1 in the fifth.

Haley Rawlins and Griffith walked and the runners pulled off a double steal. A passed ball scored a run, Andi Kleinman walked and Brown grounded out as a run scored.

The lead went to 7-1 in the sixth.

Winkler doubled and Rawlins singled for the first run. Rawlins moved up on a passed ball and scored on an error.

Fairland got a run in the bottom of the seventh when Caitlin Stone singled and Ellen Hinshaw and Maddy Kazee reached on errors.

Winkler was 2-4 with a triple and two runs batted in to lead South Point.

Stone went 2-4 and Riley 2-3 to pace Fairland.

On Tuesday, South Point (2-0, 1-0) visits Portsmouth Notre Dame and Fairland (1-2, 0-1) travels to Russell, Ky., at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
