COAL GROVE — They say nobody’s perfect. Try and convince Brandon Boggs of that.

Boggs pitched a five-inning perfect game as the South Point Pointers blanked the Coal Grove Hornets 11-0 Monday in a game for first place in the Ohio Valley Conference.

“My hat is off to Beefy and the entire team,” said Pointers’ coach Marty Patrick. “We witnessed a rarity tonight: a perfect game along with a great offense and defense. We are really proud of this team.”

Boggs struck out seven batters and relied on his defense for the other eight outs.

“Boggs is a good pitcher and he throws hard. He threw a great game and we didn’t adjust to him. It was definitely a learning experience for our young guys,” said Hornets’ coach Dean Mader whose team fell to 5-1 and 3-1 in the league.

The Pointers 6-1, 4-0) got the only runs they needed in the second.

Patrick Jones singled, Logan Wade doubled and Tyler Branch had a two-run double.

The Pointers scored five runs in the third.

Alex Whitt was safe on an error and Boggs doubled. Chris Woodard hit a sacrifice fly, Patrick Jones singled and Logan Wade had a two-run single. Brandon Layne singled and Branch had an RBI single. Layne scored on a passed ball.

The lead went to 10-0 in the fourth.

Boggs was safe on a fielder’s choice, Woodard singled and Jones had an RBI single.

A passed ball scored a run and Wade doubled in a run.

The final run scored in the fifth when Whitt doubled and came around to score on a wild pitch.

Jones and Wade each went 3-3 and Branch 2-3. Wade had three RBIs and Branch two.
