COAL GROVE — Not a lot happened, unless you were Daniel Rutherford.

Coal Grove blanked the River Valley Raiders 2-0 Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game that had just four total hits.

But Rutherford was putting up the numbers with a one-hitter that saw him strike out 10 and walked just one.

“Rutherford pitched really well and we played pretty solid defense,” said Hornets’ coach Dean Mader. “River Valley isn’t a bad team. They’ve played almost everyone close.”

The Hornets (6-1, 4-1) got a run the only run they really needed in the first inning when Jesse Rigsby, Conor Markins and Rutherford all singled.

Coal Grove added an insurance in the fourth without the aid of a hit.

Travis Carey reached on an error and moved up on a throwing error. He stole third base and scored on a passed ball.

Jordan Gilliland singled in the fourth inning for the Raiders’ only hit.

The Hornets host Portsmouth Thursday.
