Local track standouts advance

CHILLICOTHE — The weather wasn’t good, but the results were.

Several area athletes qualified for the Division III regional track meet after the first day of competition Wednesday.

The Coal Grove Hornets went 1-2 in the discus. Junior Austen Pleasants was first with a toss of 133-10 and senior Zack Shannon threw 126-2 as the runner-up.

Ironton junior Tim Maynard was third in the pole vault as he cleared 11-8 while Coal Grove senior Ian McFarland went 10-8 to place fourth as both qualified to the regional meet.

Hornets’ senior Mason Nance was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18-9.5 to advance.

The Hornets’ 4×800 relay team qualified for the regional meet as Tyler Waddle, Wyatt Schultz, Jon Joseph and Brandon Adkins ran a 9:12.32 and placed third. All are juniors except Schultz who is a sophomore.

The Coal Grove Lady Hornets’ 4×800 relay team of junior Tori Holmes, sophomore Bethany Moore, senior Sami Stormes and junior Leslie Mulkey was eighth with an 11:43.18 time.

Mulkey also placed in the high jump as she cleared 4-6 to finish seventh.

The second day of the meet is Saturday.

The top four qualifiers in each event advances to the regional meet Wednesday, May 28, and Friday, May 30, at Lancaster Fairfield Union High School.
